Recyclables Accepted at McIntire Road Recycling Center

McIntire Entrance

A grassroots recycling movement began in the Charlottesville / Albemarle area in the early 1970's with a glass recycling center at the Barracks Road Shopping Center. Soon thereafter, recycling in our area began in earnest with the formation of the Charlottesville Ecology Club. A glass recycling center was opened in February of 1973 at the corner of Ridge and South Streets. Fifteen to twenty 50-gallon drums of glass were collected the first day. As the volume continued to increase,  the Club first relocated to the fire station on Rt. 250, then, in 1979, the recycling center moved to its its present day site at McIntire Road. Over 691,000 pounds were received at the Center that first year.

In 1991, the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority took over the operation of McIntire Road Recycling Center. Today, the Center receives visits from over 500 customers each day and recycles over 5 million pounds of recyclables each year.

Recycling Plastics is Now Easier Than Ever!

We have streamlined plastics recycling into just TWO BINS: rigid plastics and flexible plastics.

Plastic bottles and containers are #1-#7 rigid plastics (water bottles, jars, cups, storage containers, and more). It is no longer necessary to separate #1s and #2s.

Just what is flexible plastic or plastic film?

Plastic bags and wraps are the soft, flexible polyethylene plastic used in many grocery, bread, zip-top & dry cleaning bags. It's also used in packaging paper plates, bathroom tissue, diapers, etc.
